NARRATIVE:

1. This citation was taken from Faye Moran’s webpage at http://www.fmoran.com/wilkes/roaring.html and not from the original document.  July 12, 1787, was a Thursday, not a Saturday.  Faye attained the information which was transcribed by Hal Maynard in May, 1998, according to the transcriber’s notes.  Mr. Maynard transcribed the document not from the the original church records but from two older typed versions obtained from church members Vance and Quincy Johnson.  The copy located on the shelves of the DAR Library in Washington, DC, was of poorer quality according to Mr. Maynard’s notes.

2. This James Caudill was almost certainly James Caudill, Jr. [408] and not his father James Caudill, Sr. [614].  Both men married a woman named ‘Mary’, a situation which lends itself to confusion, speculation, uncertainty, and doubt.  I’ve seen no evidence beyond circumstantial and anecdotal the James Caudill, Sr. was ever in Wilkes County, NC.

NARRATIVE:
1. The previous entries, dating back as far as 1788, were entered as ‘John and his wife’.  Beginning in about 1797 or 1798, the references to John cease implying perhaps he has passed.
2. At this same time, we first observe a Salley Caudle receiving tobacco poundage for the care of John and wife. Again speculating, perhaps Salley is a daughter that has now come of age?
3. Knowing that ‘Sally’ is a nickname for Sarah, I’m willing to believe that Sarah and Salley are one and the same person in these multiple separate entries.
4. In the entry on this page (p. 201) we discover that John’s wife was named Nancy.

[RECORD 1800-C]

August 4, 1800

1800 Federal Census, Second Census of the United States.

  • Stephen Dennis Laffoon; Salisbury, Surry, NC; p. 674.

Stephen Dennis Laffoon was a son of Matthew Laffoon. Matthew and Nathaniel received a 400 acre land grant in VA in 1759 next to Stephen Caudle. In 1826, Stephen Dennis Laffoon is attesting on behalf of of Lewis Caudle of Surry Co., NC, surrounding a Rev. War Pension Application.

  • Absalom Caudle: Fayetteville, Anson, NC; Series: p. 217.

Absalom is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756.

  • Blecker Caudle: Hillsborough, Chatham, NC; p. 163.

Bleckner’ is between 16 and 25 years of age, therefore, born between 1784 and 1775. Wondering if perhaps this is Bledsoe Caudle?

  • Gregory Coddle: Abbeville, SC; p. 28.

Gregory is over 45, therefore, born before 1755.

  • David Cordell: Salisbury, Rowan, NC; p. 423.

  • Jeremiah Caudle: Morgan, Wilkes, NC; p. 33.

Jeremiah is between 16 and 25 years of age, therefore, born between 1784 and 1775.

Jeremiah has a young male <10 in the household which doesn’t align with his traditional list of children. His first born, Sarah, wasn’t born until 1801. Is this a child that died young?

  • Jesse Caudle: Morgan, Wilkes, NC; p. 33.

Jesse is between 16 and 25 years of age, therefore, born between 1784 and 1775. This Jesse is far too old to be Jesse P. Caudill born 1795. There’s a male child over 10 years of age, therefore, this Jesse was born very near to 1775 to have a ten year old child. There appears to be a senior female in the household age over 45.

  • Jesse Cordle: Laurens District, SC; p. 19.

Jesse is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756. Jesse is enumerated about 48 polls from Sampson Caudle.

  • Jesse Caudle: Hillsborough, Chatham, NC; p. 209.

Jesse is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756.

  • John Cauddle: Salisbury, Cabarrus, NC; p. 716.

  • John Caudle: Hillsborough, Chatham, NC; p. 176.

John is over 45, therefore, born before 1755. He owns one slave.

  • Joshua Caudle: Hillsborough, Chatham, NC; p. 177.

Joshua is between 16 and 25 years of age, therefore, born between 1784 and 1775. Three children are in the household, one over ten years of age, indicating he must be closer to 25 years of age than 16.

  • Lewis Caudle: Johnston, NC;

Lewis is over 45, therefore, born before 1755.

  • Mathew Caudle : Morgan, Wilkes, NC; p. 33.

Matthew is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756.

  • Moses Caudle: Salisbury, Surry, NC; p. 643.

Moses is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756.

  • SampsonCaudle: Lancaster District, SC; p. 18.

Sampson is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756. There are nine individuals in his household. He is enumerated with Stephen Caudle, heavily suggesting a relationship between these two men. Lancaster is only five miles from NC, due south of Charlotte. Lauren, SC, is about 60 miles from Lancaster – there are two Sampson’s in SC of similar age.

  • Sampson Cordle: Laurens District, SC; p. 20.

Sampson is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756. There are five individuals in his household. Sampson is enumerated about 48 polls from Jesse Caudle.

  • Stephen Caudle : Morgan, Wilkes, NC; p. 33.

Stephen is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756.

  • Stephen Caudle: Lancaster District, SC; p. 18.

Stephen is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756. There are nine individuals in his household. He is enumerated with Sampson Caudle, heavily suggesting a relationship between these two men.

  • Thomas Cadle: Salisbury, Surry, NC; p. 643.

Thomas is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756.

  • Thomas Coddele: Pendleton District, SC; p. 118.

Thomas is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756. If this is Thomas Aaron Caudill, then there should be 8 children born between 1790-1800 and not 5 as indicated in the census. Thomas’ son William reports being born in Wilkes County, NC, during the 1850 census then states South Carolina during the 1870 census. This must be Thomas Aaron even with all the discrepancies. Thomas has one slave.

  • William Cottle: Hillsborough, Chatham, NC; p. 207.

William is between 26 and 44 years of age, therefore, born between 1774 and 1756.

In the 1800 Federal Census of Fayetteville, Moore Co., NC:

Andrew Cadle; Thomas Cadle; Moses Cadle; Benj. Cadle; Jonathon Cadle; Daniel Cadle; James Cadle; William Cadle. Preliminary research indicates these men are related to James Daniel Caddell, son of James Banks Caddell.

In 1810 they were living in St. Andrew’s Parish of Brunswick County, Virginia, with his parents. This was on Little Creek that flows by the farm of David Pritchett. The will of William Pritchett Sr. identified Sterling as his grandson, and maybe was Mary’s father’s favorite.
